Lluis Mather Quartet @ Cheltenham Jazz festival reviewed!

Moon Unit Unveiled

New collaberative band lead by trumpeter Aaron Diaz debuted at this years inaugural Harmonic Festival in Birmingham. With influences from Frank Zappa to Arve Henrikson and everywhere in between this band look to develop a truely unique sound with contributions from all its members. After a further performance at Flatpack Film festival and some fine tuning; this project next appears at the new Mostly Jazz Festival in July.

Appearances at Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2010

The Lluis Mather quartet and Sid Peacock Big Band are both appearing at Cheltenham International Jazz festival on 3rd May. Lluis is on at 12pm and Sid at 4.30pm. Please come and support these gigs, they are both truely unique and experimental projects, I am playing double bass with Lluis and trombone with Sid's band, its going to be a really exciting day for me and it would be great to see some of you there!

Lluis Mather Quartet wins the Dave Holland Ensemble Prize 2009

The Lluis Mather Quartet featuring Lluis on sax, Dave Greatrex on guitar, Jim Bashford on drums and myself playing bass won the 2009 Dave Holland ensemble prize hosted by Birmingham Conservatoire. It was a great evening of music with sets from the birmingham based Sam Wooster quartet and the returning Dan Nicholls with his new project "Hyderabad".

The prize was adjudicated and presented by Dave Holland himself who commented that he had thoroughly enjoyed all of the performances. The quartet will get an oppertunity to record as part of the prize and will hopefully also perform at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Cobweb Collective

The cobweb collective in birmingham runs several jazz nights areound the city. The ever energetic atmosphere in the Yardbird on thursday nights has become a regular stopping point for touring bands from all over the country. More recently The Cross in Moseley has become a hot jazz venue with the first gig of the autumn featuring the ever impressive Kit Downes trio.


A little about me...

Since graduating from Birmingham Conservatoire in 2008 Rob has lived and worked around Birmingham and the Midlands as a multi-instrumentalist playing Trombone, Double Bass and Electric Bass. He has also been involved in educational projects around Birmingham and also in Dumfries, Scotland.

On Bass Rob has been fortunate enough to play with many rising jazz musicians including John Randall, Alex Merritt, Dan Nicholls, Freddie Gavita, Adam Jackson and Ben Bryden to name a few! In April 2009 he was also lucky enough to play in the UK quartet of legendary saxophonist Carlos Garnett, and in May toured with acclaimed Irish singer Camille O'Sullivan.

Trombone credits include the Conservatoires UK Big Band, Mike Fletcher's "More Or Less Ensemble", Sid Peacock's "Surge", the Shrewsbury Big Band, Aaron Diaz's "ZappaJazz", the Huw Rees Octet and various other ensembles largely based around the Midlands.
